Wiley College will celebrate Religious Emphasis Week February 13-16, 2012, with a slate of community worship services and activities that will be led by two prominent pastors, the Reverend Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, the pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, and the Reverend Michael W. Waters, MDiv., pastor of Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Dallas, Texas. Reverend Haynes will speak at the opening Community Worship Service Monday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel, and Reverend Waters will speak Thursday, February 16 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel for the College and Community Worship Service.
Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III has served as pastor at Friendship West for 28 years, where he has grown the congregation from hundreds to nearly 12,000. He has led the congregation with a commitment to Christ, passion for people, and yearning for community transformation. Rev. Haynes champions social change through his service on numerous boards including the National Action Network, and the Conference of National Black Churches.
Reverend Waters will also lead a Theology of Hip Hop Student Forum on Wednesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. in the Colleges Freeman P. and Carrie E. Hodge Center.
Reverend Michael W. Waters, the founder and Senior Pastor of Joy Tabernacle, was named among the top young leaders in America by Ebony Magazine (April 2009). Reverend Waters has strong commitment to urban renewal and community transformation as evidenced by his founding of two nationally recognized programs: The Macedonian Project, an outreach ministry that works to empower adolescent males; and the SMU Civil Rights Pilgrimage. He is a much sought-after preacher and lecturer who has appeared on The NBC Nightly News, and ESPN Live. His keen insights have been quoted by noted journalist Bill Moyers.

The conference is designed to examine the historic and cultural experiences of Black people throughout the Diaspora and the resultant actions and reactions.The conference will be held on the campus of historic Paine College from February 6-9, 2012.

The civil rights icon who leads marches, stands up for workers and the wrongly accused brings a powerful message to Middle Georgia during Fort Valley State Universitys Black History Month observance Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Health and Physical Education Complex. Sharpton headlines the John W. Davison Lecture Series for the spring semester.

His life work includes numerous essays, articles, reviews, and blogs through the years for publications such as Esquire, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Essence, Rolling Stone, The Amsterdam News, huffingtonpost.com, and Vibe, where he was a founding staff member and served as a senior writer, interviewing and profiling, among many others, General Colin Powell and the late Tupac Shakur. Additionally Kevin has been a writing fellow for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, as well as a Phelps Stokes Fund senior fellow.

Lichtman, a history professor at American University in Washington, D.C., testified: The bottom line is the state has been investing substantial amounts of capital [and operational] allocations over a 27-year period in the historically Black institutions relative to the six non-historically Black institutions, not counting the University of Maryland-College Park.
